Cub Camera | Recent Happenings at Morningside
We had the official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for our new addition.
Our third-graders visited Roanoke Mayor, Sherman Lea, and toured the City Council Chambers to learn more about local government, civics, and how they, even at a young age, can make a difference in their communities.
Students who showed interest in learning more about cooking were selected to participate in the Roving Chef Program. Students toured the kitchen, learned about nutrition and got to make and eat their own pizza.
Our 4 and 5 year olds explored the 5 senses and made gingerbread cookies before their winter break.
Our Girls on the Run Team ran their first 5K of the year to close out the Fall/Winter 2023 season. Ms. Cardin has sent information for the Winter/Spring 2024 Season home with students in the 21st Century Afterschool Program.

Attendance Matters: We need you here!
Attendance plays a MAJOR role in a student's success. Students who do not regularly come to school perform lower academically than their peers. We LOVE having a building filled with Cubs and want to see everyone every day!
As of 1/5/24, Morningside's Chronic Absenteeism Rate is at 19.08%. For state accreditation, we must be below 15%.
Classroom Updates:
Preschool
Mrs. Lineberry and Mrs. McConchie (Two and Three Olds) - We hope all our families enjoyed their winter break! The first week or two back from break will be focused on re-adjusting to our classroom rules, routines, and schedule. Our next pretend play unit will be the doctor's office. We will be talking about the roles of a doctor, nurse, and patient. We will learn about bones and organs, look at X-rays, and name different parts of our body. We will learn about different doctor instruments and how they are used. This is always a fun and exciting unit for our kids! Academically, we are continuing to learn many early reading skills through our Really Great Reading and Heggerty programs. We are also learning math skills like counting, one-to-one correspondence, sorting, and number identification.
As the weather continues to get colder, please remember to dress your child in appropriate clothing (or send in backpack: hats, gloves, and winter coats).
Ms. Beisley and Ms. Durham (Four Year Olds) - Our preschoolers are learning about showing kindness toward others, upper and lowercase letters, shapes: identifying and making with Playdoh, what comes next in a pattern, reading comprehension and sequencing events in a story, beginning sounds in words and our names, and identifying feelings in ourselves and others.
