    Parent and Family Engagement Policy

    PART I- REQUIRED COMPONENTS

    1. This school will jointly develop/revise with parents the school Parent and Family Engagement policy and distribute it to parents of participating children and make available the Parent and Family Engagement policy to the local community.
    • Stakeholders (administration, teachers, and parents) will meet to review and discuss revisions to this policy.
    • This policy will be made accessible to parents on the school website.

     

    1. Convene an annual meeting, at a convenient time, to which all parents of participating children shall be invited and encouraged to attend, to inform parents of their school’s participation in the Title I program and to explain the requirements of Title I, and the right of the parents to be involved.
    • The Title I annual meeting will be held during the first nine weeks of school.  The meeting will be scheduled in the evening to provide opportunity for all parents to attend.
    • A PowerPoint presentation will be presented with information regarding the Title I program.
    • Teachers will be available to answer questions and provide suggestions to parents for support at home.

     

    1. Flexible meetings, such as meetings in the morning or evening, will be provided using Title I funds.
    • Meetings will be scheduled on different days of the week at different times to accommodate as many families as possible.
    • Parents have the opportunity to choose conference times that meet their needs and/or the option to conference via phone or conduct a virtual meeting.

     

    1. Parents will be involved, in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of the school plan under Section 1112, schoolwide under Section 1114, and the process of the school review and improvement under Section 1116.
    • Parents are included, as appropriate, in decision-making related to the schoolwide plan and school improvement plan.
    • Parents will serve on school advisory committees to assist in the education of their children.

     

    1. Implement an effective means of outreach to parents of English learners, in a language the parents can understand, to inform them regarding how they can—
    • be involved in the education of their children; and
    • be active participants in assisting their children to—
      • attain English proficiency;
      • achieve at high levels within a well-rounded education; and
      • meet the challenging State academic standards expected of all students

     

    • Parents of ELs will receive school communications in a language they can understand.
    • Translators are present at school meetings to help with communication.
    1. Provide parents of participating children—
    • timely information about Title I programs;
    • a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet;
    • if requested by parents, opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children, and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practically possible.
      • Annual Meeting held during first nine weeks of school to inform parents about Title I program requirements.
      • Parents are provided a Parent Handbook that contains information related to policies and procedures, calendar of important dates, medical and health information, attendance, etc.  Parents should contact the school principal for information regarding curriculum and forms of academic assessments.
      • School staff are always available to accommodate parent requests for meetings to discuss the education of their child.  Meetings will be scheduled in a timely manner.

     

    1. If schoolwide program plan is not satisfactory to the parents of participating children, submit any parent comments on the plan when the school makes the plan available to the district.
    • Annually when the schoolwide plan is reviewed, any unsatisfactory comments from parents on the schoolwide plan will be submitted along with the school’s schoolwide plan.  Plans and comments will be submitted to the Federal Programs office.

     

     

    PART II-REQUIRED SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES FOR HIGH STUDENT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

    A school-parent compact was developed to share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement.  School-parent compacts are signed by the Principal, Teacher, Student, and Parent.

    1. School/Teacher Responsibilities
      1. Provide a safe learning environment.
      2. Provide high quality instruction in a supportive and effective environment.
      3. Send progress report to parents two times per year.
      4. Schedule at least one parent/teacher conference a year or as needed with due consideration to parent/family needs.
    2. Parent/Guardian Responsibilities
      1. Schedule daily homework time.
      2. Monitor school attendance.
      3. Monitor out-of-school activities.
      4. Talk with your child.
      5. Express high expectations and offer praise and encouragement.
      6. Volunteer in your child’s classroom.
      7. Attend parent/family conferences.
      8. Establish a family routine.
      9. Be a positive role model for your child.
      10. Involve your child in problem-solving situations.
      11. Use screen time wisely.
      12. Read together often and encourage use of the public library.
    3. Student Responsibilities
      1. Attend school regularly.
      2. Be a good school citizen.
      3. Show respect for parents and teachers.
      4. Be a good messenger between school and home.
      5. Read with an adult often.
      6. Use screen time wisely.

     

    • Parent Teacher conferences are scheduled twice a year to provide parents information related to their child’s progress.  Parents are encouraged to contact the school for additional meetings with teachers as needed. 
    • Frequent reports are provided to parents on their child’s progress.  Interim reports are sent home four times a year.  Report cards are sent home four times a year.
    • Parents have access to a parent portal to see their child’s grades.
    • Parents are provided opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class and observation of classroom activities.
    • Communication between family members and school staff are provided through multiple methods such as emails, phone calls, text messages, take home folders, newsletters, parent resource links and, to the extent practicable, are provided in a language that family members can understand. 

     

    BUILDING CAPACITY FOR PARENTS AND STAFF – REQUIREMENTS FOR ENGAGEMENT

    To improve student academic achievement, this school will ensure effective involvement of parents and will support a partnership between the school, parents, and the community in the following ways:

    • School events planned to assist parents in understanding the challenging State academic standards, how to monitor a child's progress, and work with educators.

    September 5th—Title 1 Annual Meeting and Back-to-School Night

    October 3rd—PTA meeting and Virginia Literacy Act Info

    February 13th—PTA meeting and Testing Info

     

    • School events planned to provide materials and training to help parents to work with their children, such as literacy training and using technology.

    November 15th—Books, Buddies, and Breakfast

    • School events planned to provide professional development to teachers, specialized instructional personnel, and other staff on the value of parents and their communities to increase academic achievement.

    Faculty Meetings—September 18th, October 16th, and November 21st

    • School partnerships with local businesses and organizations to enhance school programs and events.  These partnerships encourage and support parent engagement and coordinate activities with other Federal, State, and local programs including public preschool programs.

    21st Century—supporting the academic program from September 9th through May 30th (specific parent involvement dates have not been set)

    • Ensure that information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities is sent to the parents of participating children in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand.

    PART III-ACCESSIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

    Schools, to the extent practicable, shall provide opportunities for the informed participation of parents and family members (including parents and family members who have limited English proficiency, parents and family members with disabilities, and parents and family members of migratory children), including providing information and school reports required under section 1111 in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language such parents understand.

    • Translate or provide interpretation of all school documents and communication to make them accessible in the parent’s preferred language and for those with vision or hearing impairments.
    • Provide interpretation services, if needed, for parent-teacher conferences and in person meetings.
    • When possible, provide multilingual staff, parent-friendly signs, and resources in multiple languages.
