Mia Hancock-Keeling Named Virginia School Social Worker of the Year
Mia Hancock-Keeling has been named the 2024 Virginia School Social Worker of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Social Workers. She currently serves students with disabilities at Patrick Henry High School, William Fleming High School, and Woodrow Wilson Middle School.
Mrs. Hancock-Keeling, who is also a Roanoke City Public Schools alumna, began her career with RCPS in 2017 after completing graduate school and interning with the school division.
"It's an honor to be recognized by the state," Mrs. Hancock-Keeling said. "It's a reminder that I am doing something right, and I am making an impact in the social work profession."
Working with students is her favorite part of the job. "I love teaching them, watching them blossom, and grow into young adults," she said.
The Virginia Association of School Social Workers (VASSW) selected Mrs. Hancock-Keeling for "going above and beyond in her work," including being a leader in the profession, making significant contributions to the association, and engaging in significant community outreach. She is the VASSW president-elect and Roanoke/Souhwest Region chair. "We are very grateful for her hard work!" said VASSW President Jessica Hawkins.
