Roanoke City Public Schools will be offering both Credit Recovery and Virtual Academy Summer Enrichment courses during the summer of 2023. Summer classes will take place June 20 to July 27, 2023, with no classes on Tuesday, July 4.

Summer Credit Recovery
Students who did not pass a required course will have an opportunity to recover credit this summer.

Students who passed the SOL test for any particular course will be allowed to make up the SOL course using the Plato software and may complete the course at an accelerated rate.

If a course does not have an SOL test associated with it, the course may be taken using the Plato software.

Students who did not pass the SOL test for a particular course will retake the course in the traditional manner, with a focus on preparation for SOL testing.

• Algebra Functions Data Analysis (AFDA)
• Algebra I and II
• Biology
• Earth Science
• English 9-12
• Geometry
• U.S. Government
• VA/U.S. History
• World History I and II

Summer School Sessions:
Students will attend 1/2 day during summer school: 

 • Morning Session: Monday through Friday, 8:55 a.m. to 12 p.m.
 • Afternoon Session: Monday through Friday, 12:30 p.m. to 3:35 p.m.

Location:
Classes will be held at William Fleming High School, unless student is a Noel C. Taylor or Forest Park summer graduate. Noel C. Taylor and Forest Park will hold Summer School for their students. 

Important Dates:

• Tuesday, June 20, 2023: First Day of Summer School
• Tuesday, July 4, 2023: 4th of July Holiday, non-student day
• Thursday, July 27, 2023: Last Day of Summer School
• Friday, August 11, 2023: Summer School Graduation (William Fleming High School, 1 p.m.)

Fees:

• Tuition is $75.
• All fees will be added to the student's account and must be paid by June 16, 2023.
• Fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable

Transportation will be provided as needed.

RCPS Virtual Academy Summer Enrichment
During the summer session, rising 10th through 12th grade students will have the opportunity to take ONE of following online classes for one high school graduation credit through RCPS:

• Health and Physical Education 9
• Health and Physical Education 10 (Driver’s Education is not included) 
• Economics & Personal Finance (Students must participate in in-person testing at William Fleming High School)

Eligibility:

• Students who are currently enrolled in grades 9-12 and reside in Roanoke City may register for an enrichment course. Non-residents of Roanoke City will not be accepted.
• Students will need to register for RCPS Virtual Summer Enrichment no later than June 16, 2023.

Expectations:

• Students will complete all coursework using the Canvas and Microsoft Teams learning platforms; therefore, students must have access to the internet.
• Students are expected to actively participate in all learning opportunities as presented by the teacher.
• Students must attend each synchronous teaching session and complete all asynchronous assignments as directed by the teacher.
• Students may not be absent from more than two synchronous instruction sessions.
• All asynchronous work must be completed to receive credit for the course.
• All coursework must be completed by 12 p.m. on Thursday, July 27.
• Those taking Economics and Personal Finance will take the W!SE assessment in-person at William Fleming High School on Thursday, July 27.

Important Dates and Information:

• Registration will occur with each student's school counselor beginning the week of May 15 and continuing until June 16, 2023.
• Tuesday, June 20, 2023: First Day of Summer School – log on to Canvas to meet teacher and begin classwork
• Tuesday, July 4, 2023: 4th of July Holiday, non-student day
• Thursday, July 27, 2023: Last Day of Summer School – Final Course Exams – All coursework assigned by teacher completed by student

Transportation will be provided as needed. Transportation routes will be posted approximately one week prior to summer school beginning.
