Caroline Eschenbach and several dignitaries holding a ceremonial check for $25,000.She had no idea!  During a surprise assembly, Caroline Eschenbach received a $25,000 Milken Educator Award.  Mrs. Eschenbach was the only recipient this year from Virginia.  The Milken Award is considered the Oscars of teaching.  She is the reading teacher for third graders at Virginia Heights Elementary.

The award was presented by Superintendent of Public Instruction James Lane, Secretary of Education Atif Qarni and Milken Foundation Senior Vice President Jane Foley.  Caroline received plenty of hugs from her colleagues when the announcement was made.

Eschenbach joins a pretty exclusive club.  Only 2,700 educators have received this honor since 1987.  She is the second Roanoke educator to receive this prestigious award.  Wade Whitehead of Crystal Spring Elementary received the Milken Educator Award in 2000.
