Dr. Bishop speaking from a podium at Convocation

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Welcome to the 2018-19 school year.  Many people have worked all summer to create a wonderful learning environment for our students.

A few updates:

  1. The Division hired a new Chief of Security, Chris Perkins.Mr. Perkins is the former Roanoke City Chief of Police.Keeping our students and staff safe is the Board’s first priority. You will notice security enhancements throughout the district.Mr. Perkins is conducting extensive training sessions.National security expert Ken Trump worked with staff over the summer and will return in November to train additional school personnel.
  2. Mathematics coaches have developed new materials to reflect the new Virginia mathematics standards. The standards are focused on new technologies and reflect best practices in mathematics education.
  3. The construction schedule for a new Fallon Park Elementary School is on time.We look forward to moving some classes into the new structure in December.
  4. RCPS+, the six-week summer program focusing on enrichment, hosted approximately 500 more students than last year. This program enables our students to learn new concepts and is very “hands on.”

Our students met with many successes last year.  They performed very well academically, and all schools showed growth.  The Arts Program continues to flourish with invitations to Disney World and Chicago’s Orchestra Hall this year.  Athletic programs were successful.  I believe in our students; we will continue to provide the best opportunities to prepare them for their futures.

All of this is possible because of our committed administrators, teachers, and staff.  In a time of acute teacher shortages, we were able to hire many qualified teachers to fully staff the district.

The School Board extends its best wishes.  Our students come first!  We all know our students are the future.  Strong Students, Strong Schools, Strong City.

I always welcome your suggestions.  Together we grow stronger.  I am proud to live in a seven-time All-America City!

Best regards,

Rita D. Bishop, Ed.D
