Middle School Spelling Bee

Toby Tate of Woodrow Wilson Middle holding his trophy for winning the Spelling Bee.For the second consecutive year, a Woodrow Wilson Middle School student has won the District Spelling Bee.   Toby Tate won in the 7th round with the word "strenuous."  The 8th grader will now compete in the Regional Spelling Bee in March.

A student from each of the city's five middle schools competed in the Spelling Bee.  The competition was especially tough this year.  The Spelling Bee included words like "monsieur," "generalissimo," and "repugnance."  Ryan Vance of Lucy Addison Middle School was the runner-up. 

Once again, Robin Reed of WDBJ-TV was the pronouncer.  This year's judges were Laura Kelly and Corey Allder of Roanoke City Schools, as well as Amber Yopp of the Roanoke City Public Library.
