Our priority in Roanoke City Public Schools is always the health and safety of our students. Out of an abundance of caution, the decision has been made by Roanoke City Public Schools to postpone middle school athletics. The decision is necessary due to COVID-19 levels in our City and the health and safety protocols required during practices and competitions. To comply with the COVID-19 mitigation strategies and guidelines, additional staffing and space are required. The additional restriction of limiting spectators to 25 also means that Roanoke City Public Schools cannot effectively and successfully support a middle school athletic schedule at this time.
Our goal is to implement school-based athletic programs at each middle school beginning in February, pending decreases of COVID-19 cases in our area to the moderate (yellow) or lower (light green) transmission stage per the CDC Dynamic School Decision Maker criteria. Each sports program will have a three-week period to hold drills, practices and workouts at their respective schools. There will be no competitions between the middle schools for the 2020-21 school year. The tentative schedule for school-based athletic programs is below:
Date (3 weeks)Indoor/Gym-Outdoor
- February 1st - 19th: Volleyball and Cross Country/Track
- February 22nd – March 12th: Boys Basketball and Girls Soccer
- March 15th – April 1st: Girls Basketball and Boys Soccer
- April 12th – April 30th: Wrestling and Softball
- May 3rd – May 21st: Tennis and Baseball
Eighth graders participating in junior varsity sports will participate on their respectively-zoned high school JV teams.
Roanoke City Public Schools understands the importance of school athletics. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work together during these challenging times.
