For Roanoke City Public Schools' rising 5th through 8th grade students, this summer has been an opportunity to try something new and step outside their comfort zone.

RCPS added athletics and fine arts camps to its summer programming for the first time, with nearly 300 students registering.

In June, the Department of Visual & Performing Arts hosted a Summer Stock Academy, which allowed selected students to learn the basic of theatre. In just over a week’s time, students learned lines, choreography, and performed Aladdin Jr. in front of a public audience.

Then, throughout July, coaches and high school athletes hosted weekly Summer Athletic Enrichment Camps. Students took part in half-day camps, which included mentorship from older students and hands-on learning. Sports offered were tennis, lacrosse, soccer, softball, volleyball, baseball, football, cross country, and golf.

Throughout these camps, students built positive relationships and found new ways to be creative and have fun in a safe environment. In addition, the success of these programs is thanks to the hard work and dedication of staff, coaches, and high school student-athletes.
