City of Roanoke School Board Building Name Designation Review Committee Schedules Community Meetings
for Stonewall Jackson Middle School

The Roanoke City School Board has appointed a committee to explore whether the community wishes to rename Stonewall Jackson Middle School. The Building Name Designation Review Committee is comprised of representatives from the School Board, the City of Roanoke, and various community members. By the end of the school year, the committee will make a recommendation to the Roanoke City School Board. School Board members will make the final decision.

In order to ensure local voices are heard, community meetings and a survey will be conducted during the month of March. The committee’s recommendation will be based on the data collected from the community, allowing committee members to take into consideration a broad range of stakeholders’ perspectives on the strengths and weaknesses of renaming the school.

The committee is deeply committed to hear the local community’s voices and values participation in the community meetings and the survey. Citizens are invited to attend the following community meetings:

  • March 1, William Fleming High School, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • March 15, Patrick Henry High School, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • March 26, Stonewall Jackson Middle School, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The meetings will begin promptly at 6 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m.  Attendees who wish to speak at the community meetings are required to sign up at the door, and are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of meeting.  Signs-up will begin at 5:30 p.m. and end at 5:50 p.m.  Speakers will be allotted two minutes each.  Attendees may bring a paper, cardboard, or cloth sign or banner not to exceed 11” x 14”, but no sign handles or flag poles are permitted at the meeting.  If there is inclement weather, Roanoke City Public Schools will post any announcements on the district’s website, Facebook, and Twitter pages.

Additionally, the committee has developed a survey to collect community feedback.  It will be available in paper format at the community meetings and online.  The online survey is now open and closes April 15th.  Click here to take the survey
