UPDATE 7/16/18:  The Roanoke City School Board voted 6 to 1 to rename Stonewall Jackson Middle.  The board then decided to name the school John P. Fishwick Middle School, a native of Southeast Roanoke and a former railroad executive.

In November 2017, the Roanoke City School Board appointed a committee to collect community input regarding the the question of whether to rename Stonewall Jackson Middle School.  The Building Name Designation Review Committee is comprised of representatives from the School Board, the City of Roanoke, and various community members.  Over the last several months, the committee held three public forums and conducted an online survey.  The committee has released its final report to the School Board.  Committee members say the decision was difficult and the overall mission was agonizing.
