The health and safety of students is our top priority. RCPS contracts with Carilion Clinic for school nurses, who are available to ensure your child receives the care needed when they are sick or to help meet their medical needs.

Information and forms related to Student Health are available below.  


Role of Student Health Services

  • Provide acute and emergency health care
  • Assist in performing state-mandated Health Screenings
  • Plan and/or implement in-school care for students with chronic or ongoing illnesses
  • Administer or supervise medication administration
  • Provide healthcare counseling and education
  • Review student health records for compliance with state mandates
  • Facilitate student access to health care providers
  • Facilitate communication between school, parents, and health care providers and/or community resources
  • Monitor health status and trends
  • Control communicable disease
  • Promote health and safety

Virginia Department of Health Requirements for School Enrollment

State laws require that children receive a comprehensive physical examination and be adequately immunized as appropriate for the child's age before entering public kindergarten or elementary school. The physical examination must be completed no longer than one year before the child's entry into kindergarten or elementary school. Accommodations for meeting the immunization requirements may be made for students who are military dependents, homeless, or in foster care. The School Entrance Health Form and Certificate of Religious Exemption are available from your child's school or may be accessed at the Virginia Department of Health website.

Kindergarten:

7th grade:

  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) Vaccine
  • Meningococcal Conjugate (MenACWY)
  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is also highly recommended but is not required.

12th grade:

  • Meningococcal Conjugate (MenACWY)

Student Health Clinics

Carilion Clinic Adolescent and Student Health Services is conveniently located in both high schools. This is a great benefit to parents and high school students who can save time by receiving services without ever leaving the school grounds. Additionally, the LIFT Center at Fallon Park Elementary School is available for Fallon Park students.
