Critical Shortage Opportunities for Retirees
Retired educators and staff bring a wealth of experience, and RCPS is excited to offer ways for you to stay connected. If you’re a Virginia Retirement System (VRS) retiree, you may qualify for certain full-time, temporary roles that let you return to work while continuing to receive your retirement benefit. These “critical shortage positions” are identified each year by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).
Some jobs in public schools are designated as critical shortage positions. These roles help schools fill urgent needs. Eligible retirees may be able to work full-time in these positions while still receiving retirement benefits under VRS rules.
Important: Rules and eligible positions are set by VRS and VDOE. RCPS will help you understand the process, but final eligibility decisions come from VRS. Visit the VRS website to learn more.
Examples of Critical Shortage Roles
While the list changes each year, these types of positions are often included:
-
Teachers, including special education and hard-to-fill subject areas
-
Principals and assistant principals
-
School nurses, social workers, and psychologists
-
Bus drivers, food services staff, and paraprofessionals
-
School security officers (retired sworn law enforcement may qualify)
Eligibility
-
Retirees must meet VRS requirements to return to work and continue receiving retirement benefits.
-
Retirees must have a break in service of at least six consecutive months.
-
Critical shortage roles are typically full-time and temporary. Retirees in these roles do not earn additional VRS service credit while receiving a retirement benefit.
