Homeless Support

During the 2021-2022 school year, 590 students were impacted by homelessness in Roanoke City Public Schools. The McKinney-Vento Program provides support for students and families who are experiencing housing instability.

Homelessness can take on many different forms. For some of our students they live in shelters. Others live in hotels or are doubling up with our families. Simply put, a student who is considered homeless doesn't have a permanent residence or the stability that comes with a place to call home.

Individuals, organizations, and businesses that wish to support students may make monetary or material donations to the Help the Homeless Fund.

Help the Homeless Fund

The Help the Homeless Fund seeks to prevent families from becoming homeless. Since the fund's inception in March 2016, Roanoke City Public Schools has provided $44,083.86 in support to help 293 families, which has impacted 636 of our students. The fund supports things such as utility payments or rent to prevent evictions. The funding is used to fill the gaps after all other community resources have been exhausted.
