Citizen Participation

The Roanoke City School Board values open communication and is committed to hearing the views of employees, students, parents, guardians, and the citizens of Roanoke. Opportunities are provided at regular meetings of the Board for all who wish to bring their thoughts and concerns before the Board. Each citizen is permitted to address the School Board for the time period announced by the Chairman or Vice Chairman. 


The School Board values open communication and we look forward to receiving your comments. We must, however, encourage civil public discourse. We ask that you keep your comments respectful in helping us achieve that goal. Citizen comments offer an opportunity for the public to inform the Board. The Board and Superintendent generally do not respond to comments made or questions posed. If you would like answers to questions, please present them in writing to the Clerk after speaking. Staff is present at the Board meeting and whenever possible will assist you with your inquiry.

Citizens who wish to address the Board about an item on the agenda may speak (1) during agenda Item 4. "Citizen Participation on Agenda Items," or (2) prior to the presentation of the agenda item.

Citizens who wish to address the Board about an item not on the agenda may speak during agenda Item 5. "Citizen Participation on Non-Agenda Items." Citizens who speak on non-agenda items should be aware that because School Board meetings are formal proceedings, the Board will listen intently and receive their comments. Citizens who request specific information will be asked to submit this in writing. There will be no Board action at the completion of citizens' comments. 

Citizens who wish to speak at the time the agenda item is presented will be called upon before the Board's discussion of the item, and the Board may ask questions for clarification. 

Meetings are posted on the meeting calendar for the current school year. The location of each meeting is also recorded on the calendar. Meeting dates and locations may be obtained from the Board's website at or by contacting the School Board Clerk at 853-2381.

Persons wishing to address the Board on agenda or non-agenda items should register in one of the following ways:
Before noon on the day of the meeting, telephone the Clerk at 853-2381 to register. You will be asked for your name, address and the subject you wish to present


• Arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time of the meeting and sign the register listing your name, address and the subject you wish to present. Citizens who do not register in advance of the meeting will not be called upon to speak.

When your name is called, please go to the speaker's podium. Clearly state your name and address for the public record. Share your comments with the School Board. If you have documentation or a formal written statement that you wish to share with the Board, please file this documentation with the Clerk. 

The citizens of Roanoke have entrusted the education of their children to the Roanoke City School Board. As stewards of that trust, the School Board relies heavily upon the input received. Thank you in advance for your interest and participation.
