School Safety & Security
Safety & Security Updates
The safety and security of students and staff are our top priorities. We are committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment where every student and staff member feels both physically protected and psychologically supported. Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and RCPS takes a proactive, layered approach in partnership with law enforcement and the community.
In 2022, in response to community feedback, the School Board approved 25 additional safety measures. These improvements continue to guide our work today and have become part of our ongoing, divisionwide safety framework.
The information below provides an overview of RCPS' safety measures. RCPS also uses certain protocols in the event of an emergency or critical incident to help keep students and staff safe. Information about the threat assessment process and communications guidelines are also available for the community to view.
Additional parent resources, including where to obtain free gun locks, mental health support, and more is available on our school counseling page.

Safety & Security Measures
Infrastructure & Physical Security
RCPS invests in modern facilities, technology, and building improvements to keep students and staff physically safe. From secure entrances to upgraded cameras, these systems work together to prevent and respond to potential threats.
Staffing
The most important resource in keeping our students safe is our people. We know that students remain safe when they are connected to trusted adults. In addition, we partner with law enforcement to ensure schools are staffed, supported, and trained to handle emergencies quickly and effectively.
Emergency Planning & Response
Every RCPS school follows a detailed emergency plan that outlines how to prepare for, respond to, and recover from crises. Regular drills, reunification procedures, and communication tools help ensure everyone knows what to do when seconds matter.
