EVENT: Some Roanoke Academy Elementary Students Earn Limo Ride to Golden Corral for Passing Preliminary SOL tests
SCHOOL: Roanoke Academy Elementary
DATE/TIME: April 21, 11 a.m.
DETAILS: On Thursday at 11am two limousines will transport 40 Roanoke Academy Elementary students to Golden Corral for lunch with their principal as a reward for their academic success. The students are being rewarded for passing all of their Standards of Learning (SOL) simulation tests.

EVENT: Patrick Henry Student Wins Top Award in Future Business Leaders of America Competition
DETAILS: Patrick Henry student Kashon Blount won first place in the impromptu speaking category of the Future Business Leaders of America State Competition. She will go on to represent Virginia at the national FBLA competition in Orlando this summer.
EVENT: Wasena Seedlings Gardening Club Featured on Roanoke Clean Valley Website for Green Initiatives
DETAILS: The Wasena Seedlings Gardening Club is a featured school on the Clean Valley Council’s website: www.cleanvalley.org. The gardening club is comprised of parents and students who are volunteering to build and plant four garden beds at the school. The group is doubling their gardening space and will meet throughout the spring to plant and harvest lettuce, arugula, spinach, strawberries, potatoes, carrots radishes and more! The Clean Valley Council is a non-profit organization that has served the Roanoke Valley for more than 30 years. CVC provides educational programming and citizen participation events to spread the word about litter prevention, recycling, waste stream reduction, stormwater pollution prevention and protecting natural resources.

EVENT: Fishburn Park Environmental Focus School Hosts Earth Week Celebration SCHOOL: Fishburn Park Elementary
DATE/TIME: April 18th – Opening Ceremony, April 22 – School wide Parade 1:00 p.m.
DETAILS: Fishburn Park’s theme this year for Earth Week is “Waves of Change”. During the week students will learn how they can make a change for their Earth, community and themselves. The festivities will start with an Opening Ceremony and conclude on Earth Day with a parade focusing on ocean life.

EVENT: Patrick Henry Marketing Students Host First-Ever Prom and Spring Fashion Show SCHOOL: Patrick Henry High School
DATE/TIME: April 20 at 7 p.m. and April 21 from 11 a.m.-12 noon
DETAILS: The PH Fashion Marketing Class presents their first annual Prom and Spring Fashion show. The event will showcase the latest designs from Men’s Wearhouse, David’s Bridal, Patina’s, Bridal House, Premiere Jewelry and Strawberry. Tickets will be on sale in the cafeteria and at the door.

DETAILS: Grandin Court Elementary celebrates Arbor Day on the school’s playground with special guests including the Mayor and other environmental representatives.

EVENT: Lincoln Terrace Elementary Students Present Check to Rescue Mission During Special Assembly
SCHOOL: Lincoln Terrace Elementary
DATE/TIME: April 22 at 1 p.m.
DETAILS: The kindergarten students of Lincoln Terrace Elementary, along with faculty will present the $530 they raised from a bake sale to the Rescue Mission on April 22 at 1p.m. The check presentation will take place during a special assembly known as the “A Team Assembly” which celebrates the students for academics, attitude, attendance and community service.

EVENT: Forest Park Academy Student’s Artwork will be Featured on City Billboards after Winning “Be a Teen Now & a Parent Later Art Contest” SCHOOL: Forest Park Academy
DETAILS: In an effort to educate the public about May being National Teenage Pregnancy Prevention month, Freedom First sponsored the “Be a Teen Now & a Parent Later” art contest which invited students in the area to design a billboard. The top prize has been awarded to Forest Park Academy’s Nuhad Al-Shiblawi. Al-Shiblawi’s artwork will be displayed on six billboards around town and in various malls throughout the month of May.

The top three winners all came from Forest Park Academy:
Nuhad Al-Shiblawi- 1st place, $75 Target card
Araceli Castaneda- 2nd place, $50 Target card
Cameron Ferguson- 3rd place, $25 Target card

EVENT: Art Show & Silent Auction at Noel Taylor at Oakland LOCATION: Noel Taylor at Oakland
DATE/TIME: May 12, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
DETAILS: Noel Taylor students will showcase their artwork during a silent auction. The community is invited to attend and there will be light refreshment served and entertainment for guests.

EVENT: Patrick Henry Governor’s School Student Heads to International Science Fair SCHOOL: Governor’s School
DATE/TIME: May 8-13
DETAILS: Patrick Henry High School/ Governor’s School student Rachel Strauss will be competing in the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles. Strauss will be presenting a display on how corrosive environmental items such as salt affect the strength of concrete. Strauss is an 11th grader who has been working with college and high school faculty on her science research for three years.

EVENT: Fine Arts Festival Week Features Unique Talents of Patrick Henry Students SCHOOL: Patrick Henry High School

DETAILS: Patrick Henry is hosting a Fine Arts Festival Week featuring a dance recital, visual art reception, fine arts performances, a jazz band concert, choir concert, guitar concert and orchestra concert. The evening performances are free and open to the public. The schedule is as follows:
