EVENT:  RCPS Division-Wide Spelling Bee
SCHOOL: Addison Middle
TIME: 10:00 a.m.
DETAILS:  Individual spelling bee champions from RCPS schools will compete in the District-Wide Spelling Bee competition at Lucy Addison. The winner will advance to the regional competition.  
 
EVENT:  Patrick Henry High School Teacher Featured in National Magazine
SCHOOL:  Patrick Henry High School
DETAILS:  Patrick Henry teacher Roshi Matewere was recently featured in Parade Magazine for her humanitarian work with the Peace Corp program. The article reflected on President John F. EVENT:  Two William Fleming Students Advance to State Choral Competition

SCHOOL: Addison Middle
TIME: 4:00 p.m. -6:00 p.m.
DETAILS:  The RCPS City-Wide Science Fair will begin at 4:00 p.m. for an Open House with an awards presentation to follow at 5:30 p.m. Snow date is scheduled for March 3, 2011.

EVENT:  Character Rocks Concert Kicks Off at Madison Middle School
SCHOOL:  James Madison Middle
TIME:  2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
DETAILS: Valley Character, a community-wide organization dedicated to raising the level of character in Roanoke Valley's youth and parents will host a Character Rocks concert at James Madison Middle School. Local hip-hop/rap band Poe Mack with DJ Van Gundy will perform and motivate students with positive messages. Roanoke community leader Damon Williams of First Citizens Bank and the "Twin Hoops" basketball camp will emcee the event. Keith Farmer of Straight Street will also present a short program on "Rachel's Challenge"-a nationwide anti-bullying program. Rachel's Challenge is the transformational program named after the first girl murdered in the Colombine incident 10 years ago in Colorado. The event was made possible thanks to Kroger and Valley Character.

DETAILS: Step Afrika, the world’s only professional team dedicated entirely to the tradition of stepping will be performing at Lucy Addison. Step Afrika will also be performing at the Jefferson Center.

EVENT: Roanoke Career and Technical Education (ROTEC) Hosts Extravaganza and Fundraiser With President of Martinsville Speedway
SCHOOL/LOCATION: Patrick Henry/Jefferson Center

DETAILS: ROTEC will be hosting a fundraiser and extravaganza to showcase their programs and raise support for the Career and Technical Education program. The event will be held at the Jefferson Center beginning at 5:00 p.m. and will feature student exhibits, a silent auction, and a dinner gala. The keynote speaker is the President of Martinsville Speedway, Clay Campbell. Tickets are $50 per person and businesses are encouraged to sponsor on a gold, silver, or bronze level of donation.

EVENT: Westside Teacher Named State Reading Teacher of the Year

DETAILS: Ashleigh Fisher, teacher and reading specialist at Westside Elementary recently was named the State Reading Teacher of the Year by the VA State Reading Association. She will receive the award during the Virginia State Reading Association Conference in March.

EVENT: Hairspray Musical Features Talent from Across the Roanoke Valley

DETAILS: The Colonel’s Theatre Company will be bringing in talent from William Fleming, Patrick Henry, James Madison Middle, and Roanoke Catholic to perform in the musical Hairspray. The musical performance will feature both students and faculty from all over the Roanoke Valley. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and can be purchased on show nights at the Dickinson Auditorium Box Office (opening at 6:30); through Fleming’s Main Office (Larry Van Deventer, 853.6241) or Roanoke Catholic’s Main Office (Reed McGinn, 982.3532).
