Event:  New Partnership with Two Virginia Colleges Provides RCPS Students with Mentoring and Tutoring Support and Health Education

School:  Madison, Fleming

Details: Students from Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Jefferson College of Health Sciences will be working in various schools and RCPS programs over the next six weeks. Projects include, assisting with the homeless student program, promoting health awareness at Madison Middle School, and tutoring and mentoring students in math and science at Fleming High School. The college students will be working at the following locations on the listed dates:

 

EVENT:  Foundation for Roanoke Valley Awards 20 Grants to RCPS Teachers to Help with Instruction

DETAILS:  The Foundation for Roanoke Valley has generously given nearly $5000 in grants to teachers in RCPS, helping to provide new textbooks, teaching materials, and financial backing of various reading readiness and creative learning projects for students. This was the first year of the “Grants 4 Teachers” program and the Foundation of Roanoke Valley awarded 20 grants to RCPS teachers. Below is a list of all the recipients:

Highland Park teacher Keith Thomas used his grant to purchase easy-to-use reading technology for students in Pre-K through Grade 3. 

 

 

EVENT:  Monterey to Perform at Barnes and Noble to Raise Support for School Book Fair Performance

SCHOOL: Monterey

TIME: February 11, 5pm

DETAILS:  Monterey students will be performing at the Valley View Barnes & Noble on Friday, February 11; beginning at 5pm. The school will receive a percentage of all profits at either Roanoke store if Monterey is mentioned when purchases are made on February 11-13. Monterey is inviting the community to come out to their event, buy a book and support their school.

 

 

EVENT:  Highland Park Elementary Students Surprise Bus Drivers with Tokens of Appreciation for National “Love the Bus” Month

SCHOOL:  Highland Park Elementary

TIME: February 15, 2:20pm

DETAILS:  Highland Park Elementary students will surprise their bus drivers with a banner and other tokens of appreciation when they dismiss from school and load their buses. School bus drivers nationwide will be honored during February for providing safe, reliable service during “Love the Bus” month.  

EVENT:  “Why Our Black is Beautiful”-Black History Month Celebration

SCHOOL:  Noel C. Taylor

TIME: February 17, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

DETAILS:  Noel C. Taylor students will be celebrating their 4^th Annual Black History Month Program by performing “Why My Black is Beautiful,” featuring essays, poetry readings, a rap performance and a fashion show. Free dinner sponsored by several local businesses will also be included.

EVENT: Noel C. Taylor Blood Drive

TIME: February 19, 2011, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

DETAILS:  Noel C. Taylor and the American Red Cross are partnering with Step Into my Life Youth Outreach to sponsor a blood drive. The blood drive will be held in the school gymnasium. Appointments are recommended but the drive is open to all.

 

 

EVENT:  Students to Perform in Black History Month Program

SCHOOL: Fishburn Park Elementary

TIME: 1:00 p.m.

DETAILS:  Students at Fishburn Park will be performing in their annual Black History Month Program-activities include music, poetry readings, drums, folktales and more!

 

EVENT:  RCPS Division-Wide Spelling Bee

SCHOOL: Addison Middle

TIME: 10:00 a.m.

DETAILS:  Individual spelling bee champions from RCPS schools will compete in the District-Wide Spelling Bee competition at Lucy Addison. The winner will advance to the regional competition.  Snow date is scheduled for March 2, 2011.

 

 

 

EVENT:  RCPS City-Wide Science Fair

SCHOOL: Addison Middle

TIME: 4:00 p.m. -6:00 p.m.

DETAILS:  The RCPS City-Wide Science Fair will begin at 4:00 p.m. for an Open House with an awards presentation to follow at 5:30 p.m. Snow date is scheduled for March 3, 2011.

 

 

EVENT: Roanoke Career and Technical Education (ROTEC) Hosts Extravaganza and Fundraiser With President of Martinsville Speedway

SCHOOL/LOCATION: Patrick Henry/Jefferson Center  

TIME: March 10, 2011

DETAILS: ROTEC will be hosting a fundraiser and extravaganza to showcase their programs and raise support for the Career and Technical Education program. The event will be held at the Jefferson Center beginning at 5:00 p.m. and will feature student exhibits, a silent auction, and a dinner gala. The keynote speaker is the President of Martinsville Speedway, Clay Campbell. Tickets are $50 per person and businesses are encouraged to sponsor on a gold, silver, or bronze level of donation.

 

 

 

EVENT: Westside Teacher Named State Reading Teacher of the Year
SCHOOL: Westside

DATE/TIME: March 17-19, 2011

DETAILS: Ashleigh Fisher, teacher and reading specialist at Westside Elementary recently was named the State Reading Teacher of the Year by the VA State Reading Association. She will receive the award during the Virginia State Reading Association Conference in March.
