Event: Three RCPS Schools Receive State VIP Honor
Details: Grandin Court Elementary, Crystal Spring Elementary and Preston Park Elementary all received the 2011 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) Awards from Governor McDonnell and the State Board of Education. Crystal Spring and Grandin Court received the Board of Education Excellence Award and Preston Park received the Board of Education Competence to Excellence Award. The VIP award is based on each school’s student achievement and for far exceeding minimum state and federal accountability standards during the 2009-10 school year.
Event: New Partnership with Two Virginia Colleges Provides RCPS Students with Mentoring and Tutoring Support
Details: Students from Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Jefferson College of Health Sciences will be working in various schools and RCPS programs over the next six weeks. Projects include, assisting with the homeless student program, promoting health awareness at Madison Middle School, and tutoring and mentoring students in math and science at Fleming High School.

Details: Ashleigh Fisher, teacher and reading specialist at Westside Elementary recently was named the State Reading Teacher of the Year by the VA State Reading Association. She will receive the award during the Virginia State Reading Association Conference in March.

Event: RCPS Kicks off New Year Promoting Healthy Living with Parent University event in partnership with the Kirk Family YMCA

TIME: January 22, 10-2pm
Details: New this year, Parent University will be hosted at the Kirk Family YMCA on January 22, 2011 from 10-2pm. Parents will have the opportunity to attend several educational and energetic workshops with their children including a Zumba workout session, Junior League Kids in the Kitchen healthy cooking class, and an Internet Safety workshop presentation by the state Attorney General’s office. RCPS will also give away free school supplies, in addition to providing lunch, transportation, childcare and access to the Y heated indoor pool at NO COST!

Event: Monterey to Perform at Barnes and Noble to Raise Support for School Book Fair Performance

Details: Monterey students will be performing at the Valley View Barnes & Noble on Friday, February 11; beginning at 5pm. The school will receive a percentage of all profits at either Roanoke store if Monterey is mentioned when purchases are made on February 11-13. Monterey is inviting the community to come out to their event, buy a book and support their school.

EVENT: PH Players Travel to Regional Competitions

DETAILS: The PH Players earned second place during their Halifax trip where they performed the one-act comedy “Six Days to Melissa” for the District One-Act Play Competition. Their outstanding performance earned them a spot in the regional competition in Manassas, VA. The regional competition will take place on February 19th at Osbourn High School on Manassas, VA.
