Roanoke City Public School Division is receiving state recognition for environmental stewardship. RCPS won the top award for school divisions with more than 10,000 students in the 2010 Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Green Schools Challenge. The Roanoke City School Board’s support of several environmental friendly initiatives including, the windmills at William Fleming stadium, the environmental focus school at Fishburn Park Elementary School and composting at six schools-all contributed to winning the Green challenge. Winners were announced at the VSBA Annual Convention, at the Opening General Session on November 17 in Williamsburg. The competition was sponsored by Moseley Architects. Winning school divisions were selected from over 54 entries, and 35 school divisions were recognized as certified green school divisions. RCPS school board member Suzanne Moore says, “I am so appreciative of all the work the school division has done in the last four years to become environmentally conscious-this is truly a significant accomplishment.”

The VSBA Green Schools Challenge is a friendly competition designed to encourage implementation of specific environmental policies and practical actions that reduce the carbon emissions generated by both the local school division and the broader community. This is the second year the awards were given out.
