EVENT: RCPS participates in 10,000 Steps A Day

DETAILS: RCPS employees are participating in a fitness and healthy lifestyle initiative through November. 10,000 Steps A Day is a wellness competition that encourages people to get out and become active. The winning team receives a celebration party, and a group photo will be posted on the RCPS website.

EVENT: Fishburn Environmental School Gets Community Support on Outdoor Projects
SCHOOL: Fishburn

DETAILS: The Fishburn PTA will be completing various outdoor projects including a pre-K outside drawing area, mulching, landscaping, and renovations to the amphitheatre. The PTA community nights will be held on Wednesday, October 6 and Thursday, October 8.

EVENT: Students Hold Ribbon Cutting Ceremony To Celebrate their New Grandin Court Gymnasium
SCHOOL: Grandin Court Elementary
DATE/TIME: October 8, 1pm
DETAILS: Grandin Court Elementary students will hold a special ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate their non-traditional style new gymnasium. The new facility is dome shaped and is made of membrane fabric which is more cost efficient. The total price of the gym project is about $400,000-nearly half the amount of a traditional gym. The ribbon cutting ceremony kicks off on Friday at 1 p.m.

EVENT: Highland Park Elementary Walk-a-Thon

DATE/TIME: October 8, 9 a.m. -2 p.m.
DETAILS: Highland Park Elementary School will kick-off their annual Walk-a-Thon on October 8, 2010 from 9am-2 p.m. During this time, each grade level will walk and help raise money for the school. The event corresponds with the division-wide wellness initiative, 10,000 Steps a Day, which began in September. The wellness initiative runs throughout the month of November.

EVENT: WVEC banquet at Madison Middle School
SCHOOL: Madison Middle School
DATE/TIME: October 8, 6 p.m.
DETAILS: The annual Western Virginia Education Classic (WVEC) banquet will be held 6 p.m. at Madison Middle School. St. Paul’s College and Bowie State football players that will be playing in the WVEC game on Saturday will be attending the Friday night dinner. Dr. Rita Bishop, TAP organizers and city dignitaries will also attend the banquet. RCPS Students will attend the banquet as well and have a unique opportunity to meet with college athletes.

DATE/TIME: October 9, Parade begins at 10 a.m. (starts at Burlington Coat Factory), Game at 1 p.m.
DETAILS: St. Paul's College will face Bowie State (Md.) University on Oct. 9, in the 11th annual fundraiser football game. The classic benefits Project Recovery, a Total Action Against Poverty (TAP) program to help high school dropouts get an education.

EVENT: U.S. Dept. of Education/U.S. Secret Service Safe School Initiative Threat Assessment Training
SCHOOL: Fleming
DATE/TIME: October 11, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm.
DETAILS: The Safe School Initiative Threat Assessment training presents the findings from the U.S. Dept. of Education/ U.S. Secret Service Initiative (SSI) research, which is focused on the thinking, planning, and other behaviors engaged in by students who carried out attacks on schools. The session provides strategies for educators, law enforcement officials, and others to target, intervene and prevent targeted acts of Roanoke City
violence. The training also includes information on the threat assessment process and how to identify students who are potentially dangerous and may pose a risk.

EVENT: William Fleming Inner City Athletic Association Homecoming Game

DETAILS: The William Fleming (ICAA), one of the oldest youth athletic organizations in the city, will be hosting their first annual homecoming game. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $2.50 for children 12 and under. As part of their “Pull Up Your Pants Campaign” attendees can receive $1.00 off admission if they bring a new, unused belt to the game.

October 21: Breckinridge assembly at 9:00 am & 10:45 am; 12:00 pm FOR meeting; 4:00 pm parent meeting.

DETAILS: A presentation and training session informing students about the life of Rachel Scott, the first person killed in the Colombine tragedy. This program motivates students to embrace a positive change in the way they treat others. Parent sessions and “Friends of Rachel (FOR)” meetings are offered at the times listed above.

EVENT: The Reality Store Project

DETAILS: ROTEC will be conducting the Reality Store Project for every 8th grader in the division. This program is designed to give students an excellent opportunity for career exploration. The event also prepares students for career development, interpersonal development, financial literacy, and bridging the gap between education and real life. Each student chooses a job, marital status and whether or not they have children, and then make mock essential purchases and payments in their checkbooks before leaving the event.

EVENT: Book Dedication in Memory of Crystal Spring Faculty Member

DETAILS: The book dedication is in memory of Jan Hutsell, a member of the Crystal Spring Faculty who passed away last year. Following the dedication, the school will host Grandparent’s Day activities, and guest author Mike Should will visit various classrooms and give writing lessons.

EVENT: Halloween Hoops 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament and Family Carnival
SCHOOL: Addison
DATE/TIME: October 30, 10:00 am, Championship game begins at 3:00 pm.
DETAILS: The basketball tournament and family carnival will feature a number of festivities including face painting, arts and crafts, a moon bounce, concessions and a costume contest to take place at 1:30. The cost for unlimited play in the Family Carnival is $5, and basketball teams can be registered at $50 for a group of five. There will be a youth category (13-17) and an adult category (18+) for competition.
