To the Teachers, Staff, Students, and Families of Roanoke City:

Welcome to school year 2016-2017!  While the start of school marks the end of a well-deserved summer break, we now turn to celebrating the endless possibilities the beginning of the school year brings.

The mission of the Roanoke City Schools is to “graduate students prepared for life in a rapidly changing world.”  We are very proud of all that you collectively accomplished last year.  You achieved an on-time graduation rate of at least 86% (a remarkable feat given that in 2006, our graduation rate was 56%).  You once again eliminated the achievement gap among our diverse student body.  And, you once again equipped our students with the skills to thrive in our community post-graduation.

Along with our excitement over these milestones comes our commitment to strive for more.  We know there are still challenges to overcome, and greatness is not achieved by complacency.   The only way to provide the best possible outcomes for all students is to work together as a team.

We are guided in our leadership of the Roanoke City Schools by a set of core beliefs.  They are:

·         Our diversity is a source of strength.

·         Our schools must be safe.

·         All students are capable of meeting high expectations.

·         We are accountable for our students’ success.

·         Every individual in our Division contributes to student success.

·         We have a responsibility to work collaboratively with our families.

·         Respect, trust, and honest communication are the foundation of successful and productive relationships.

·         The vitality of our community depends on a strong school system.

The School Board is committed to these core beliefs, and we are committed to supporting each teacher, staff member, student, and family member.  You have our promise to do all we can to provide you with the tools you need to achieve even greater success and to take joy and pride in the journey along the way.

Information about the School Board and the dates of our public meetings may be found online at: www.rcps.info (click on the red tab labeled “School Board”).  You can also contact us via email at: BoardClerk@rcps.info.  We encourage you to tell us how we can help you.

Best of luck this school year, and thank you for your unwavering commitment to our children.
