Crystal Spring Elementary students posing together in a new after school programToilet paper, zip lines, and homemade musical instruments can lead to a lot of fun.  But it is also a great way to learn math.  This year, Crystal Spring Elementary started a Crazy 8s Math Club for 4th and 5th graders.  It meets once a week after school.

The club is designed to get students fired up about math.  They build stuff, run and jump, and make a mess.  The activities are so much fun, the students don't even realize they are using and learning math.

When we visited the club, a group of students was making their own zip line.  One group placed their string four feet off the ground, the next went higher.  The students then had to determine whether the height of the string impacted the speed of the zip line.

The Crazy 8s Math Club is so popular nearly 40 students are participating each week.  It adds up to a lot of fun and a passion for math.
