RCPS+ Information:

Our summer enrichment program RCPS+ is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year.  More than 3,400 students are participating in this year's program.

RCPS+ will run from June 19 to July 28.  There is no RCPS+ Tuesday, July 4th. 

RCPS+ Elementary runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday thru Friday.  RCPS+ Middle runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Elementary Theme: Reading by Design

 

  • Rising Kindergarten students will focus on phonological awareness, sight word recognition, developmental writing, vocabulary and oral language development, interactive read alouds, and independent time in text

  • Daily 2-hour reading block that includes a whole group enrichment lesson, small group leveled instruction, school-wide read aloud activities and writer’s workshop will incorporate mentor texts each week

  • Weekly themes: Week 1: Scientific Investigation-Bubbles, Week 2: Technology-Rollercoasters, Week 3: Engineering-Bridges, Week 4: Arts-Secret Messages, Week 5: Math-Shapes & Mosaics, Week 6 Structures-Houses

  • Each week incorporates writing, close reading, and other researched based comprehension strategies through technology, art projects, and presentations

  • Participation in a One Book, One School Project: Grades K-1 - The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary; Grades 2-5 – The Homework Machine by Dan Gutman

  • Daily 105-minute math block with a daily focus on developing number sense and problem solving

  • “Math by Design” lessons focus on architecture, engineering, problem solving, and creativity

  • Collaboration in small groups to problem solve through number games, discovery, and investigation

  • Active engagement in mathematical challenges that will require students to use measurement, geometry, and patterns to create structures that can stand alone

Middle Theme: Full STEAM Ahead

 

  • An enriched STEAM curriculum incorporating reading, writing, mathematics, science, and the arts

  • Units focus on problem solving, research, critical thinking, and communication skills

  • Field trips include: 5-5-5 at Roanoke Technical Education Center (ROTEC), Mill Mountain Theatre, and Summer Theatre Academy at Patrick Henry

  • Lessons will incorporate technology, keyboarding practice, and on-line research

  • “Break Out” Boxes, digital “Break Outs” online, Little Bits STEAM Kits, and Hands-on engineering with everyday items
