Dr. White Named Virginia Superintendent of the Year

Roanoke City Public Schools is thrilled to announce that Superintendent Dr. Verletta White has been named Virginia Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents!

The announcement was made on Monday, April 24, 2023 at VASS’ annual conference in Roanoke. Dr. White will now represent the Commonwealth of Virginia in the National Superintendent of the Year competition.

"Verletta’s moral compass always points to doing what’s best for students and in following that path she has been tremendously successful," said VASS President Mike Gill. "Her staunch advocacy for her students and the leadership skills she employs to help them succeed, make her a great example for all of Virginia’s educators."

The VASS officers and the presidents of several major state education organizations participated in the selection process. Judges noted Dr. White's leadership in addressing post-pandemic challenges and particular success in accelerating the reading growth of students who are English Learners. In addition, judges applauded Dr. White's Staying Safe by Staying Connected initiatives to support students physically, socially, and emotionally in addition to academically, and her commitment to Career & Technical Education so students graduate with both a diploma and a resume of rich skills and experiences.

Also on Monday, the Virginia PTA named Dr. White as its 2023 Superintendent Power Partner of the Year for creating a culture of excellence and her accessibility to students, staff, families, and the community.
